Description
A vintage French movie poster of ''Bringing Up Baby'', a classic screwball comedy film released in 1938, directed by Howard Hawks and starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant in the lead roles. The film is widely regarded as one of the greatest comedies in cinematic history and is known for its fast-paced and witty dialogue, as well as its madcap plot.
The story revolves around a mild-mannered paleontologist named David Huxley, played by Cary Grant, who is on the verge of getting married to his long-time fiancée, Alice Swallow. However, his life takes a chaotic turn when he meets Susan Vance, played by Katharine Hepburn, a free-spirited and eccentric heiress who immediately becomes infatuated with him.
Susan is accompanied by her pet leopard named Baby, which adds to the mayhem as it keeps escaping and causing various comedic mishaps throughout the film. David finds himself reluctantly drawn into Susan's whirlwind world as they embark on a series of misadventures, including chasing after the escaped leopard, mistaken identities, and various misunderstandings.
As the two characters navigate a series of comical and improbable situations, their interactions and chemistry create a delightful and entertaining on-screen dynamic. The film is known for its rapid-fire dialogue, slapstick humor, and the contrast between Grant's straight-laced character and Hepburn's zany antics.
"Bringing Up Baby" is a classic example of the screwball comedy genre, characterized by its fast-paced, farcical humor and the battle of the sexes. The film is celebrated for its impeccable performances by Grant and Hepburn, as well as its clever and witty script. It has remained a beloved and enduring classic in the world of cinema, entertaining generations of audiences with its timeless humor and charm.
About the artist:
Bernard Lancy (1892—1964) was a French film poster artist. He designed posters for about 20 years, from the 1930s to about 1950. Among his most famous posters was one from 1939, "La Grande Illusion."
In 1940 he was selected to do a Japanese version of "The Philadelphia Story." For the film "Joan of Arc" (1948), he painted at least four different designs used for its posters.
Bernard Lancy turns poster movies into advertising masterpieces. His works are completely different from the realism and truthfulness of many colleagues; they incorporate caricature, geometries, patterns, and colorful drawing. The originality of this designer's style lies in his ability to integrate various languages, creating mixed compositions, sometimes loud in their integration of characters, texts, frames, and colors. Lancy keeps himself in joyful balance, moving between different elements.
